Unsure which wall fixing you need for your project? Not to worry, we’re here to help!
1. First you’ll need to figure out what your wall is made of. A hollow sound when knocking usually means plasterboard or a cavity wall, while a solid thud suggests brick or blockwork. You can always drill a pilot hole to check.
2. Check which fixings are suitable for the wall material. Dot and dab walls need fixings that go through plasterboard into block – the best fixings for dot and dab plasterboard are heavy duty dot and dab wall fixings designed for mounting heavy items without crushing the plasterboard.
Hollow plasterboard walls, on the other hand, may need heavy duty wall fixings or toggle fixings for heavier items – fixings that spread the load behind the plasterboard.
3. Match the fixing to the weight of the item, and always check the safe working load on the pack. If you’re fixing heavy items to plasterboard such as kitchen wall units, radiators or shelving, look for the strongest plasterboard fixings with a suitable load rating for the job. Matching the fixing to the wall type, weight of the item, and also the tools you have available will help you find the right fixing for the job.

Metex is proud to be an accredited Real Living Wage Employer. Every team member earns a minimum of £12.60 per hour – well above the UK government minimum of £11.44 for over 21s.
The Real Living Wage is a voluntary standard that reflects what people need to live, not just survive. This rate is based on the actual cost of living, not just average earnings, and ensures our staff earn enough to cover life’s essentials.
In Wales, where we’re based, over 160,000 jobs still pay below the Real Living Wage. We’re committed to being part of the solution.
Paying fairly is a core part of our values. It helps us attract and retain great people and supports stronger communities. We believe responsible businesses should lead by example. Fair pay isn’t just good practice – it’s the right thing to do. By paying the Real Living Wage, Metex joins over 15,000 UK employers working to make fair pay the norm.
We’re proud to support the Living Wage movement and help create a better future for workers in North Wales and beyond.
